DOMINICK TAKES GOLD

Original Member of the Washbume Trade school Chef's Alumni Association, Dominick Vinelli, has been bringing his "Dago Red" to meetings as far back as I can remember.

This year on a whim, he entered Winemaker Magazine's 2009 amateur wine making contest. He wanted criticism from impartial judges. There were over a 1000 judges. There were over 4470 entries. This was Dominick's first time entering. He made a Cabernet Sauvignon. We always knew his wine was great. We could have told you. He won the Gold Medal in his division.

Congratulations Dominick. We know we will taste your wine again. We only hope you don't raise the price too much.

LARRY GOING TO THE HOSPITAL﷓MANY TIMES

Alumnus Larry Raymond, creator of Sweet Baby Ray's Barbeque Sauce and one of the most popular restaurateurs in the Sate of Wisconsin, is having two stints put in his heart on Thursday May 21st. At that time they will check if he should be put back on the waiting list for a heart transplant. He is supposed to have shoulder surgery on Tuesday May 26th and have a Hip replacement at the end of July or early August.

Larry's son Duce is a chip off the old block. He recently won a barbeque contest in Naperville. Since his early days at the Drake Hotel, Larry has always remembered his old school. Now that he is not feeling well we will no forget him. Duce and his wife will be presenting him with his first grandchild soon.

Larry, get well soon. Your are in our prayers. God Bless!

JOHN CASTRO PASSES AWAY

Long time member of the Alumni Association, John Castro, passed way while taking a nap on May 19, 2009. He was at the Restaurant Show when he felt a little ill. He told a friend he was going home to lie down. He never woke up.

There are thousands of stories that will be told about this wonderful man. The arrangements have not yet been made. We will write more in future issues.

When he was in school he was always with Greg Duda. Greg was also an inspiration. They now leave an empty feeling in my heart.

John spent may years with ARA and Aramark and was the first person many of Washburne Trade School graduates worked for.

He had been employed for the last 25 years with Everest Dining. He achieved the position of District Manager. He, along with Area President, Alumnus Jim Kallas, exhibited how a successful food service operation should be run.

He not only had culinary skills. He was a talented musician. His band was the main entertainment at all our latest fundraisers and they performed for free. That was the type of man John Castro was.

John, you will be missed. No one who met him did not like or love him. Our industry will not have another John Castro in my lifetime.

If you would like to sign the online Legacy book, it can be found at:

May God have mercy on your soul. I have loved you.

KOCOA HONORED

Alumnus Palma Scott Winbush/Chef Kocoa was recently honored by the school as the 2009 Alumnus of the Year at the Showcase Dinner.

As is her style, she remembers the school and those who helped her in her chosen career. She never forgets.

When she was on WGN﷓TV and I was sick she remembered me. I felt blessed to have such a kind friend.

Palma, you deserve this honor. Good Luck and God Bless. Attached is her resume on the next two pages which tells why she is not to be forgotten.
